Noise exposure can have a detrimental impact on the health of your firm's employees. First, there may be an auditory health effect where the auditory system (the hair cells in the cochlea) is directly damaged, resulting in hearing loss and tinnitus. Second, noise exposure can have a non-auditory health impact where other psychological and physiological effects may occur, not least fatigue and stress.
To ensure optimal working conditions where work is organised without adversely affecting the safety and health of the employee, this is subject to legislation. The employer will identify the risks and hazards of noise and determine measures on this basis. Employees will also be informed of the risks, measures and personal protective equipment and offered the opportunity to have their hearing examined.
SAPP services
To assist clients in addressing noise risks and legal measures, Tympro has developed the SAPP method. SAPP is an acronym for signalisation, awareness, prevention and protection and covers the areas in which the employer deals with noise exposure and its consequences. If, as a company, you follow all the steps in the SAPP process, you meet all noise management requirements.
During the ‘Signalisation’ phase, noise risks and effects are assessed and measured. The noise landscape is mapped by dosimetric noise survey and the hearing of employees is examined by tonal audiometry. Based on measured results, we can give appropriate advice and further steps can be taken.

This phase refers to employee and employer awareness of noise risks within the organisation. Awareness automatically leads to increased vigilance and safety. Employees are sensitised each time during our Toolbox Meetings, during the delivery and maintenance appointments for hearing protection and during the consultation for hearing tests. The aim each time is for employees to know well when they are at risk of noise and how to protect themselves from it.

This section is about continuously monitoring the variables related to noise risks with the aim of ensuring safety at all times. If the variables change such as noise levels, hearing thresholds, communication needs, condition of otoplastics, etc., advice is given and action is taken. All up-to-date data on otoplastics, noise levels, appointments, maintenance, etc. can be managed on the Tympro Portal. All Tympro customers have access to this online platform.

The protection section refers to adequate hearing protection provided by the employer to exposed workers. At an average exposure level of 80 dB, employees are entitled to this. From 85 dB there is an obligation to wear it. Tympro produces high-quality customised hearing protection with a focus on comfort: wearing comfort, speech intelligibility and compatibility.

Hearing tests
According to workplace legislation, workers exposed to average daily noise levels above 80 dB are entitled to hearing tests. This involves examining whether the workers' hearing status is coherent for their age. If the hearing loss is too great or if the hearing function declines too rapidly over time, the cause can be investigated and preventive measures need to be reviewed. Referral to a medical setting is then also made.
Noise measurements
If workers are potentially exposed to noise, the employer should carry out a risk assessment. If the voice has to be raised to be understood by someone at less than 2 metres, the risk of harmful exposure is real. If it is then suspected that the average daily exposure exceeds 80 dB(A) or if impact noise of more than 135 dB(C) occurs, the employer should carry out a quantitative assessment of noise levels.
Toolbox Meetings
According to health and safety legislation, workers exposed to an average daily exposure of more than 80 dB(A) should receive information about the noise risks during their work. The topics: the nature of the risks, measures taken, action and limit values, results of noise measurements, hearing protection, noise damage, hearing tests and working methods.
Hearing protection
Our product specialists take ear impressions on site at the customer's premises. Otoplastics are made from these using 3D technology. During the personal delivery, the attenuation values are set according to the results of the noise test and personal preference, and the otoplastics are tested for leak-tightness. An annual maintenance and leak test help ensure continuous hearing protection. The full flow of service and products is driven on the Tympro Portal.
