Detect hearing loss

Noise can overload and damage the auditive system. This causes the hair cells in the cochlea to die. These hair cells ensure the electrical transmission of sound to the brain. Well-functioning hair cells are crucial for distinguishing frequencies, which is essential for speech comprehension. Noise-impaired hearing is thus characterised by a quieter and distorted sound perception and a decline in speech comprehension and indirectly in psychosocial well-being.

If the sound analysis shows that there is a health risk to hearing, employees should be given the opportunity to undergo audiometry. This is aimed at early diagnosis of noise-induced hearing loss and hearing preservation.

In audiometry, the participant is offered different intensities of a pure tone on several frequencies, whereby he indicates whether or not he hears it. This way, the hearing threshold is also determined for each of these frequencies. This is the intensity at which sound is just observed. The result is an audiogram that plots the hearing threshold curves of both ears across the frequencies. The type of curve and the average hearing thresholds indicate the status of hearing. Noise damage is typically characterised by a loss in the treble and mainly around 4000 Hz.

Audiometry

The participant comes consultation with the Tympro audiologist at the client’s premises and completes a form about his or her background with regard to noise exposure. They discuss this form.

The audiologist performs an otoscopy and audiometry on the participant. The audiogram is analysed and categorized based on expected hearing by age and discussed with the participant. In case of severe or progressive hearing loss, the participant will be referred to a doctor. The participant receives a concise toolbox to raise awareness about the noise hazards.

The customer will later receive a comprehensive audiometry report in which the privacy of the participants is carefully observed.

Frequently asked questions about hearing measurement

First of all, this is legally required. Employees who are exposed to a daily dose from 80 decibels are given the opportunity to periodically undergo an occupational health examination in the form of audiometry. A personal medical file is kept about this. Audiometry is primarily performed to identify early trends in any hearing loss among the customer's employees. When (incipient) hearing damage is established, timely action can be taken and measures can be taken to prevent further deterioration of hearing.
