Noise hearing impairment can be caused by 2 variants of noise exposure: continuous noise and intermittent impulse noise. Continuous noise has a continuous time sequence like the sound of a lawnmower. Impulse noise involves an extremely rapid, short-lived and gigantic energy surge. Think of the blow with a hammer. Impulse noise is then divided into impact noise (2 objects coming into forceful contact with each other) and explosion noise (banging fireworks, gunshots).
It has been shown that impulse sound can cause faster and more hearing damage compared to continuous sound than you would expect based on the amount of sound energy. A possible contributing factor is that the acoustic middle ear reflex, which partially protects us during continuous sound, is too slow to act during impulse sound. The inner ear cells are also far too overloaded during such sound energy. Adequate hearing protection is thus necessary where taking it off very briefly can have catastrophic consequences for the wearer.
