Noise-induced hearing loss can be caused by two types of noise exposure: continuous noise and intermittent impulse noise. Continuous noise has an uninterrupted time course, such as the sound of a lawn mower. Impulse noise involves an extremely rapid, brief, and massive surge of energy. Think of the strike of a hammer. Impulse noise is further divided into impact noise (two objects coming into forceful contact with each other) and explosion noise (fireworks, gunshots).
It has been shown that impulse noise can cause hearing damage more quickly and to a greater extent than one would expect based on the amount of sound energy, compared to continuous noise. One possible contributing factor is that the acoustic middle ear reflex, which partially protects us during continuous noise, is too slow to respond to impulse noise. Furthermore, the inner ear cells are subjected to far too much stress when exposed to such energy. Adequate protection is therefore essential, as even briefly removing it can have catastrophic consequences for the wearer. The Tympro Impact was developed to provide optimal protection against impulse noise.
